The Lighthouse manor
The great adventure was about to begin, the container with our worldly belongings left for Sweden, our daughter left nail marks in the road as our neighbours stood crying and waving. Goodness, what have we done?
The plan was simple enough – arrive Sweden, spend the summer at our summer house in the archipelago and look for houses in Stockholm. It sounds simple enough but alas, little did we know that the Swedish real estate market is practically non-existant during the infamous Swedish summer.
Towards the end of August we had managed to see a few houses, but nothing that really took our fancy. There was this house in Äppelviken, Bromma, looked amazing, unfortunately slightly above our pay grade. But with options quickly running out and the children’s school about to start a peek wouldn’t hurt?
As we arrive at Nyängsvägen 12, the children look up at the palatial house and asked, ”How many families live here?” it truly was an impressive house, sitting atop of a slight hill looking out over, what appeared to be, the greater part of Stockholm. That’s how it became known to us as the ”Light house manor” of Äppelviken.
To be honest, at the time we did not realise how fortunate we were to have found a place in Äppelviken. We had heard of Bromma, as my parents had friends who had lived in Nockeby, but little did we know what a gem Äppelviken was. I don’t suppose there are many suburban locations that are so picturesque and quaint and yet within an 18 minute bike ride from the heart of Stockholm. Where there are 4 top schools with in a stones throw away.
For the kids the practical aspect of having Stora Mossen and its enormous complex of ice-rinks, sports halls and football fields within a 4 minute walk was indeed priceless. Possibly more so for our son, as the true pearl in our daughters eyes was 12:an which would bring her to the capital of Swedish shopping within minutes. I guess we were all lucky in our own respect at having found the best house in the world.
With a wife who was born and raised in a tropical climate, the winters proved hard and long. The souterrain proved a welcome haven for my wife’s Atelier and creative studio / candle ”factory”. With the great big windows and the sunlight often pouring in during the short days, the winter suddenly became manageable.
The open fireplace and a food whiskey in the library proved to be my weekend saviour. To me there are few places that just feel so right and allows a peace of mind – this is my favourite room in the house.
Although the library is my favourite room, the setting of it with the living room and dinning room in a row gives the area a majestic look which just symbolises everything the house is. From having been a house with only a servants kitchen in the souterrain to modern open kitchen on the first floor, to the private living quarters on the attic floor, which allows my wife and I to escape into our own world, as the children got older and their friends took over the usual living areas. The house offers so many possibilities for so many people to go about their daily lives without stepping on each others toes. It’s just wonderful.
As the winter fades, the glory of Mr Hamilton’s astute observation that the snow melts first at Nyängsvägen 12 became abundantly clear. The first sings of spring appear here first and i suppose that is why he appointed such a lush and rich garden.
With the years, this became our home. 11 years of summer evenings grilling in the evening sun, aperitifs on the ”Punschveranda” with slices of sunlight glinting through the gold rain tree and many a wine fuelled evenings with the best neighbours in the world.
Whoever is lucky enough to acquire this amazing house we want you to know that we might leave Äppelviken, but Äppelviken will never leave us.
